Tips for accurate tuning:

  • Play one string at a time, let it ring clearly
  • Tune in a quiet environment for best results
  • The needle should be centered (green) when in tune
  • Flat (♭) means too low, sharp (♯) means too high

Standard Tuning (GCEA)

For Soprano, Concert, and Tenor ukuleles, the standard tuning is g-C-E-A.

The "High G" vs. "Low G"

Most ukuleles use Re-entrant Tuning (High G). This means the top string (G) is actually higher in pitch than the next string (C), giving the instrument its characteristic cheerful sound.

  • High G: Standard. The G string sounds high and jangly.
  • Low G: Requires a special thick string. The G is tuned down an octave (196 Hz) for a deeper, guitar-like range.

Baritone Tuning (DGBE)

The Baritone ukulele is larger and tuned lower, exactly like the top four strings of a guitar.

New Strings? Read This!

Nylon ukulele strings are notorious for stretching. If you just put on fresh strings, they will go out of tune constantly for the first few days.

  • The Fix: Tune it up, then gently pull on the string to stretch it manually. Retune. Repeat 5-10 times per string until it stabilizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my G string higher than my C string?

This is intentional! It's called "re-entrant" tuning. Unlike a guitar where strings go Low-to-High, the ukulele's G string is pitched high to facilitate close-voiced chords and rapid strumming patterns.

Can I use a guitar tuner for my ukulele?

Yes, but be careful. A standard guitar tuner might expect the low E-A-D strings. Use "Chromatic" mode on your tuner (or this website) to detect the specific C and G notes of a ukulele.

How often should I tune?

Nylon strings are temperature sensitive. Tune every time you pick up the instrument, and check tuning every 15 minutes if you are playing vigorously or if the room temperature changes.
